Profile of Prof Liz Carpenter

Liz Carpenter is Professor of Membrane Protein Structural Biology at Oxford University and Principal Investigator for the Integral Membrane Proteins group at the Structural Genomics Consortium in Oxford. She is a protein biochemist and structural biologist with experience working with both soluble and membrane proteins. Her group focuses on structural and functional studies of human membrane proteins that are associated with diseases through genetic studies, including proteins involved in neuropsychiatric conditions, rare diseases, cancer and inflammation-related diseases. In the last 10 years they have solved the structures of twelve human membrane proteins, in a broad range of protein families, including ion channels, ABC transporters, solute carriers and membrane enzymes. These structures have in many cases explained how disease-associated variants contribute to disease.
