Profile of Dr Paul Klenerman

Paul Klenerman trained in clinical medicine at Cambridge and Oxford, and specialised in Infectious Diseases. He did his PhD in Oxford on HIV immune escape and did postdoctoral work in Zurich on mouse models of virus persistence. He received Wellcome fellowship funding to set up his own lab in Oxford to study immune responses to persistent infections and worked in particular on hepatitis C virus, including early vaccine studies. He is currently chair of the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research, which focuses on host pathogen interactions. He is also since 2015 head of the Translational Gastroenterology Unit which aims to apply basic science approaches to major clinical problems in the gut and liver.
